FOSS

The department has formed a Free Open Source Software (FOSS) Cell, to make the staff and students aware of the vast possibilities in the making and use of free software. This has been planned as an extension activity of the Department. Organizing expert seminars, conducting internationally and nationally acclaimed symposiums and workshops etc are FOSS Cell activities.

Free Software is the term introduced by Richard Stallman in 1983 for software which the user can use for any purpose, study the source code of, adapt to their needs and redistribute – modified or unmodified.

It offers four kinds of Freedom for the users of the Software:

  • The Freedom to run the Program for any purpose.
  • study how the program works.
  • Redistribute copies.
  • Improve the program and release your improvements to the public.

The FOSS cell was formed in the Department of Master of Computer Applications, UC College in 2006. FOSS cell promotes the usages of open source software. Different programmes were conducted by the FOSS cell. Faculty members and students took active part in the activities.
